General Description
An infrequently imported species, the Synodontis Greshoffi is often mistaken for S. schoutedeni due to its similar appearance. This attractively patterned fish belongs to the Mochokidae family and can grow up to 26.0cm in size. It is native to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon.
Aquarium Setup
To house a Synodontis Greshoffi, a dimly lit aquarium with soft substrate, rocks, driftwood, twisted roots for hiding, and floating vegetation to dim the lighting is recommended. While other plants are beneficial, they are not crucial. Suitable water conditions include a pH range of 6.5-7.2, hardness of 5-15°dH, and a temperature between 23-27°C (see table).
Behaviour
This species tends to become slightly territorial as it matures, especially towards other Synodontis but can be kept in small groups if provided with individual refuges. Ideal tankmates include Alestiid tetras, West African cichlids, Mormyrids, Knifefish, Gouramis, and larger rasboras and barbs, avoiding smaller fish that could be considered food. While some aggression may occur, it is generally less pronounced than in other Synodontis species.
Feeding and Diet
Synodontis Greshoffi are omnivorous and adaptable eaters, accepting frozen, live, dried foods, and relishing vegetable matter like shelled peas and cucumber. They use their teeth to rasp at vegetation to meet their dietary needs.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
In the wild, S. Greshoffi breeds like other riverine Synodontis, scattering eggs in areas rich in micro-organisms during seasonal floods. They do not exhibit parental care. Sexual dimorphism includes females being plumper than males when mature, with distinct differences in genital papillae, although sexing these fish requires careful examination.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in various biotopes in the middle of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Synodontis Greshoffi's natural habitat includes regions with seasonal flooding and abundant micro-organisms.
