General Description: "Synodontis Nigrita," commonly known as the False Upside-Down Catfish, is a prevalent species frequently mistaken for the true upside-down catfish. This species can grow significantly larger than its look-alike, S. nigriventris. It is distinguishable by its greyish base coloration in contrast to the browner patterning of similar species like S. robbianus.

Aquarium Setup: To house Synodontis Nigrita, an 80-liter tank is recommended with a dimly lit environment, soft substrate, and ample hiding spots created using rocks, driftwood, and twisted roots. Including floating vegetation to diffuse light is advised, and while other plantings are beneficial, they are not obligatory (see table).

Behaviour: This species tends to display territorial behavior as it matures, particularly towards other Synodontis. While it can be kept in small groups, providing each fish with a refuge is essential. It is best housed with larger tankmates like robust cichlids, alestiid tetras, knifefish, gouramis, and larger rasboras and barbs. Due to its adult size, it is not recommended for general community tanks.

Feeding and Diet: Omnivorous in nature, Synodontis Nigrita accepts a wide range of foods, including frozen, live, and dried offerings. It also enjoys vegetable matter such as shelled peas and cucumber, which it will rasp at with the teeth in its lower jaw.

Reproduction & Dimorphism: While breeding of S. Nigrita occurs in captivity, the precise methods are unclear. In the wild, they breed in areas rich in microorganisms during seasonal flooding and are known as egg scatterers displaying no parental care. Sexual dimorphism is evident with females being plumper than males, with distinguishable genital papillae.

Habitat and Distribution: Synodontis Nigrita is a widespread species found in countries like Egypt, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, and Guinea Bissau. It typically inhabits backwaters, small pools, and ponds with varying water conditions, including a pH range of 6.0-7.8, hardness of 3-20°dH, and a temperature range of 21-28°C.
