General Description

One of the commonest Synos seen for sale, Synodontis nigriventris, also known as the "Upside-Down Catfish," is occasionally confused with S. contractus but can be easily distinguished by its features. The species boasts a belly darker than its dorsal side for camouflage against predators above. Spending about 90% of its time inverted, this fish has unique postural control mechanisms that allow it to remain stable in unusual positions, making it an intriguing addition to community tanks.

Aquarium Setup

For housing Synodontis nigriventris, a dimly lit aquarium with soft substrate, rocks, driftwood, and twisted roots for hiding is recommended. Providing broad-leaved plants like Anubias or Echinodorus and floating vegetation allows the fish to exhibit natural roosting behavior. With optimal water conditions of pH 6.0-7.5, hardness of 5-20 dH, and a temperature range of 24-28°C, a tank size of at least 70 litres is essential for maintaining these peaceful creatures successfully.

Behaviour

Synodontis nigriventris is known for its gentle nature, making it suitable for peaceful community tanks. This species thrives best in groups of 3-4 individuals, enhancing their confidence and simulating their natural behavior. Avoid housing them with aggressive fish and opt for tankmates like African tetras, dwarf cichlids, and small mormyrids to ensure a harmonious tank environment.

Feeding and Diet

Being omnivorous, Synodontis nigriventris is an unfussy eater that accepts frozen, live, and dried foods with enthusiasm. Additionally, it enjoys vegetable matter like shelled peas and cucumber, often feeding from the surface in its distinctive inverted style. Providing a varied diet and ensuring the availability of plant-based foods cater to the dietary needs of this species.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Synodontis nigriventris in aquarium conditions is achievable but details are scarce. Inducing spawning behavior may involve mimicking changes in water temperature and chemistry during the rainy season. Offering suitable breeding sites like depressions in the substrate or caves enhances breeding success, with reports of up to 450 eggs being laid. The fry, free-swimming after 4 days, adopt the distinctive inverted position after 7-8 weeks. Males can be identified by their thinner, darker bodies, distinguishing them from females.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, and Cameroon, Synodontis nigriventris thrives in densely vegetated riverbank areas. Its natural habitat provides insight into its preferences for tank setup, emphasizing the importance of replicating these conditions for optimal health and behavior.
