Behaviour

The Ocellated Synodontis should not be housed with fish small enough to be considered prey but rather with suitable tankmates such as Alestiid tetras, robust cichlids, Mormyrids, Knifefish, Gouramis, and larger rasboras and barbs. As it matures, it may exhibit slight territorial behavior, especially towards other Synodontis species, yet any aggression is typically less intense compared to other members of its genus. It can be kept in small groups in adequately sized aquariums as long as each fish has a refuge. Due to its adult size, it is not recommended for general community tanks.

Feeding and Diet

The Ocellated Synodontis is an omnivorous species that readily accepts a variety of foods including frozen, live, and dried options. Additionally, it enjoys vegetable matter like shelled peas and cucumber, which it grazes on with the teeth in its lower jaw.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

In aquaria, natural breeding has not been documented, although captive breeding has been achieved via hormone injections on commercial fish farms. The species reproduces in areas of seasonal flooding rich in micro-organisms, utilizing egg scattering as their breeding strategy with no parental care. Adult females are noticeably plumper than males, with the ability to differentiate them by examining the genital papillae, though this method requires careful handling and observation.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in Nigeria, Gambia, Chad, Cameroon, Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Niger, and Guinea, the Ocellated Synodontis predominantly inhabits streams and backwaters in these regions.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal housing, an aquarium with soft substrate, rock formations, driftwood, and twisted roots creating hiding spots is suitable for the Ocellated Synodontis. Floating vegetation is recommended to diffuse tank lighting, while additional planting can be beneficial but not mandatory.

The water conditions best suited for this species include a pH range of 6.2-8.0, hardness between 5-25 degrees of dH, and a temperature of 23-28 degrees Celsius.
