General Description
The Poll's Synodontis, scientifically known as Synodontis Polli, is a species belonging to the Mochokidae family. This fish species can grow up to 15.0cm in size and requires a minimum tank size of 80 litres. It is distinguished by its larger body spots compared to other Synodontis species, such as S. petricola, and has a longer head. Endemic to Lake Tanganyika, there are occasional reports suggesting its presence in Lake Mweru, although this remains unconfirmed.
Aquarium Setup
To provide a suitable habitat for Poll's Synodontis, it is important to mimic a Lake Tanganyika biotope in the aquarium. The tank setup should include rocks arranged to create caves and spaces of open water for swimming. These fish prefer dim lighting as they originate from muddy lake bottoms with low light levels. Ensure ample hiding spots through caves and rocky structures. Water conditions should maintain a hardness of 15-35 dH, a pH range of 7.5-8.5, and a temperature between 24-28°C.
Behaviour
When considering tank mates, Poll's Synodontis should not be kept with small fish that may be seen as prey. However, they can thrive in a community with hard water cichlids, particularly mouthbrooding species from Rift Lakes. Compatible tank mates may include adequately sized rainbowfish and livebearers that can tolerate similar water conditions. While these fish can be kept in a species group, expect some initial territorial disputes as they establish their boundaries.
Feeding and Diet
Poll's Synodontis accept a range of foods, including frozen, live, and dried varieties. Notably, they tend to reject most vegetable matter, unlike other Synodontis species. Ensuring a diverse diet is crucial for their health and well-being in captivity.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction of Poll's Synodontis has not been observed in captivity. In the wild, they are known as egg scatterers and engage in distinct pairing behaviors during the breeding process. Sexing mature individuals can be challenging, with females appearing rounder in the belly than males. Traditional methods like examining genital papillae may be less effective due to the species' small size relative to other Synodontis.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Poll's Synodontis can be found in various regions of Lake Tanganyika, such as the Bujumbura route in Burundi, different locations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and various sites in Zambia. They typically inhabit deep waters ranging from 30 to 125 meters, congregating in large schools on muddy lake bottoms. These fish prefer dimly lit environments with suitable hiding spots and may feel uncomfortable in brightly illuminated conditions without adequate cover.
