General Description

The Vermiculated Synodontis, also known as the Marbled Synodontis or Yellow Marbled Synodontis, is a visually striking species within the Synodontis family. It is considered ideal for beginners due to its attractive markings which intensify with age and its moderate adult size. This species is known to be susceptible to bloating, with the cause being unknown, suggesting a minimal feeding of dried foods.

Aquarium Setup

For the Vermiculated Synodontis, an aquarium setup with soft substrate, rocks, driftwood, twisted roots for hiding places, and floating vegetation to diffuse light is recommended. Although other plantings are beneficial, they are not essential. The ideal water conditions include a pH range of 6.0-7.5, a temperature between 22-27°C, and a water hardness of 3-15°dH (see table for details).

Behaviour

This species is known to be peaceful and can cohabitate with various species as long as they are larger than 2 inches to avoid predation. Good tankmates include Alestiid tetras, Pelvicachromis sp., Mormyrids, Gouramis, rainbowfish, and larger rasboras and barbs. While the Vermiculated Synodontis is territorial, it can coexist with its own kind if each fish is provided with a refuge.

Feeding and Diet

Synodontis are omnivorous and accept a varied diet of frozen, live, and dried foods. They particularly enjoy vegetable matter such as shelled peas and cucumbers, which they rasp at with the teeth in their lower jaw.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

The reproduction of Synodontis Schoutedeni is still uncertain, with young specimens appearing on the market without proper knowledge of commercial breeding. In their natural habitat of areas with seasonal flooding rich in micro-organisms, they are egg scatterers without parental care. Sexual dimorphism is observable in the species, with females being plumper than males, exhibiting differences in genital papillae, spermatoducts, and oviducts to distinguish between the genders.

Habitat and Distribution

S. Schoutedeni is exclusively found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it inhabits specific areas in the country. This species thrives in dimly lit environments with appropriate hiding spots and plant cover, replicating its natural habitat in captivity.
