General Description: Synodontis honti, also known as the squeaker, is a large species of catfish native to Lake Tanganyika. Growing up to 40cm in length, this fish is challenging to obtain in the hobby due to its deep-water habitat and elusive nature. As juveniles, they have a spotted pattern that fades as they mature.

Aquarium Setup: To house Synodontis honti successfully, an aquarium of at least 200 liters should be provided with a Lake Tanganyika biotope setup. The tank should include rock piles creating caves and open swimming areas. Dim lighting can encourage more activity, while ensuring there are plenty of hiding spots for the fish is crucial.

Behaviour: This species is territorial with its own kind, necessitating a large tank for a group. It is not suitable for tanks with small fish that could be seen as food but can thrive in a community of larger hard water cichlids, particularly those of Tanganyikan origin.

Feeding and Diet: Omnivorous in nature, Synodontis honti is not picky and accepts a variety of foods, including live, frozen, and dried options. They also enjoy feeding on vegetable matter like shelled peas and cucumber, using their lower jaw teeth to rasp at the food.

Reproduction & Dimorphism: Reproduction of Synodontis honti has not been observed in aquarium settings, but in the wild, they are known to spawn in open water as egg scatterers without parental care. Adult females are distinguished by a plumper appearance compared to males, with sexing possible through the examination of genital papillae, a process requiring careful handling of the fish.

Habitat and Distribution: Endemic to Lake Tanganyika, Synodontis honti prefers deep, dimly lit waters with minimal light penetration. When kept in aquariums, they are more active in lower light conditions or setups that offer ample hiding spaces and cover, mimicking their natural habitat.
