General Description

The Bagarius Suchus, commonly known as the Crocodile Catfish, belongs to the family Sisoridae and the order Siluriformes. This species is distinguishable by its distinctive physical characteristics, such as the rugose dorsal surface of the bony cranium, median sharp ridge on the supraoccipital crest, and paired sharp longitudinal ridges on the predorsal plate. It has a deep body depth of 7.9-9.3 with a darkly pigmented spot on the body, marking it uniquely from other congeners. The species is named "suchus" in reference to its appearance resembling a crocodile, reflecting its fierce aesthetic.

Aquarium Setup

The Bagarius Suchus requires a tank setup that includes dim lighting and ample refuges in the form of driftwood, large rocks, or plastic piping. It is recommended to maintain a large, mature filter system and adhere to a stringent maintenance regime with weekly water changes ranging from 50-70% of the tank volume. Providing highly-oxygenated water with significant movement is essential for the well-being of this species (see table for specific water conditions). A minimum tank size of 10,000 liters is advised due to the eventual size and natural behavior of the Crocodile Catfish.

Behaviour

Best suited for solitary living, the Bagarius Suchus exhibits behaviors typical of predatory fish. In its natural habitat, it preys on smaller fishes, amphibians, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. In captivity, it readily adapts to dead alternatives for feeding. The species should not be fed mammalian or avian meat, as it may lead to adverse health effects. Utilizing feeder fish is discouraged due to the risk of introducing parasites or diseases.

Feeding and Diet

The Crocodile Catfish is an obligate predator and feeds on smaller creatures in the wild. Young individuals can be fed chironomid larvae, small earthworms, and chopped prawns, while adults can be offered fish flesh, whole prawns, mussels, live river shrimp, and larger earthworms. It is important to avoid feeding beef heart or chicken to prevent excess fat deposits and organ degeneration. Proper conditioning of feed is recommended for nutritional value.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction of Bagarius Suchus is currently unrecorded, and details about dimorphism within the species are not readily available. Further studies are required to understand the breeding behaviors and potential differences between male and female Crocodile Catfish.

Habitat and Distribution

Bagarius Suchus is primarily found in the Mekong river system in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, as well as the Chao Phraya drainage in Thailand. The species prefers habitats in larger river channels with fast-flowing, turbulent rapids where it seeks shelter among boulders and rocks. The etymology of the genus name "Bagarius" stems from the local name "Vaghari" in Calcutta (Kolkata), while "suchus" originates from the Ancient Greek word for crocodile, highlighting its resemblance to the reptile in appearance.
