General Description
The Hara Jerdoni, also known as the Asian Stone Catfish, is a charming species characterized by elongated pectoral spines. Belonging to the Sisoridae family, this catfish is often referred to as a moth catfish due to its unique patterning and shape when viewed from above. Native to India and Bangladesh, it attains a maximum size of 3.0cm.
Aquarium Setup
For a suitable aquarium environment, a minimum tank size of 15 litres is recommended provided with an assortment of hiding spots and a soft, sandy substrate. Mimicking its natural habitat, include dried beech or oak leaves, and driftwood. The water conditions for the tank should be maintained at a pH of 5.6-7.6, a temperature range of 18-24°C, and a water hardness of 8-15°dH (see table).
Behaviour
Hara Jerdoni is a remarkably peaceful species that thrives in communities of small fish or alongside other Asian stream-dwelling species like Dario sp. and danios. It should not be housed with active bottom-dwellers as competition for food may arise. This nocturnal feeder can be kept in groups without any issues and prefers such company.
Feeding and Diet
The Asian Stone Catfish is an omnivore that accepts a variety of small foods, including dried pellets, but it favors a diet rich in live and frozen options such as bloodworms and daphnia. Since it feeds primarily at night, ensure to offer food after the lights are out to guarantee its nutritional intake.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
While Hara Jerdoni has been successfully bred in captivity, limited information is available regarding its reproduction. It is known that the species possibly lays its eggs in spawning mops. The sexual dimorphism in this catfish is uncertain, although females may appear broader when carrying eggs.
Habitat and Distribution
Inhabiting slow-moving streams and small rivers with soft substrates, the Asian Stone Catfish prefers environments high in dissolved oxygen. Its natural habitat spans across India and Bangladesh, where it can be found in serene aquatic settings.
