General Description
The Milk Spotted Puffer, scientifically known as Chelonodon patoca, is a rarer species within the Tetraodontidae family, also referred to as the Milk Spotted Toadfish or Marbled Puffer. This puffer showcases a grayish-white body adorned with brown irregularly sized dark brown markings, with distinctive white spots across its body above the midline.
Aquarium Suitability
With a temperament classified as semi-aggressive and a maximum size of 2.5cm, the Milk Spotted Puffer is not suitable for a reef tank due to its predatory nature towards crustaceans, bivalves, and other creatures that may inhabit the sandy substrate. Therefore, it is best housed in a fish-only marine system.
Demands, Care and Hardiness
Considered an easy species to care for, this puffer requires a carnivorous diet primarily consisting of shellfish to maintain its oral crushing plates. Additionally, they readily accept various frozen protein-rich foods and occasional live feeder shrimp.
Reef Suitability
Given its predatory behavior towards invertebrates and corals, the Milk Spotted Puffer is not compatible with reef aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
To ensure the well-being of the Milk Spotted Puffer, a minimum tank size of 378 liters is recommended, along with stable water conditions featuring a pH range of 7.8-8.4 and a specific gravity of 1.023-1.025.
Behaviour
Similar to other puffers, this species has the ability to inflate its body as a defense mechanism against predators.
Feeding and Diet
Feeding the Milk Spotted Puffer a diet rich in meaty foods, particularly shellfish, is crucial for maintaining its oral health.
Habitat and Distribution
Chelonodon patoca is commonly found in the wild displaying its striking markings in marine environments.
