General Description

The Cross River Pufferfish, scientifically known as Tetraodon Pustulatus, is a species found in the Cross River basin of Nigeria and Cameroon. Recent assessments have categorized it as endangered due to habitat degradation and pollution. This species, belonging to the Tetraodontidae family, can grow up to 30.0cm in length.

Aquarium Setup

For housing a Cross River Pufferfish, a minimum tank size of 540 litres is recommended (see table). The tank should be decorated with bogwood, rocks, and other enrichments while ensuring ample swimming space. These pufferfish are compatible with a planted aquarium and require meticulous monitoring of water quality. It is advised to use a larger external filter or sump due to their messy feeding habits.

Behaviour

As predators of slow-moving or sessile organisms, Cross River Pufferfish can coexist with carefully selected tank mates. They tend to ignore smaller, peaceful, and quick fish while showing biting behavior towards similarly sized species like Polypterus and larger cichlids. Suitable companions include small to medium tetras, Otocinclus species, and smaller barbs.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, these pufferfish primarily feed on molluscs but are opportunistic eaters. In captivity, a varied diet is essential, including freshwater crabs, small fish, insects, snails, prawns, and earthworms. High-quality pellets may be accepted if introduced early, but a diverse diet is crucial to prevent beak overgrowth and nutrient deficiencies. Avoid feeding avian and mammal proteins along with feeder fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of Tetraodon Pustulatus in captivity is rare, but it is presumed to be similar to other pufferfish species like Tetraodon mbu. No clear sexual dimorphism has been documented in this species.

Habitat and Distribution

Cross River Pufferfish inhabit fast-flowing sections of the river, showing adaptability to various microhabitats like rocky areas and zones with submerged wood. Occasional sightings have been noted in estuarine conditions. While endemic to Nigeria and Cameroon, most aquarium specimens are sourced from Cameroon and exported via Nigeria.
