General Description
Hygrophila corymbosa "angustifolia" is a narrow-leaved variety of the highly variable species H. corymbosa. It is native to South-East Asia, where it can be found growing emersed as well as submersed in various water flow conditions. The plant's emersed shoots feature opposite lanceolate leaves of a dark bluish-green color with a somewhat pungent smell when touched, while the submersed plants develop light green, longer, and narrower leaves. This plant is often referred to as "Hygrophila angustifolia" in the trade, even though it is distinct from the botanical species H. angustifolia.
Aquarium Suitability
Hygrophila corymbosa "angustifolia" is suitable for aquariums and is frequently available commercially. It is categorized as very easy to care for and fast-growing, making it an ideal plant for both beginners and experienced aquarists. This plant serves as a useful indicator for various nutrient deficiencies due to its rapid growth rate.
Demands and Hardiness
Cultivating H. corymbosa "angustifolia" in aquariums requires providing sufficient light, ample CO2 supply, and essential nutrients like nitrate, phosphate, potassium, and trace elements. It thrives under strong lighting conditions but demands adequate nutrient levels to prevent deficiencies that can manifest in the plant's leaves. The plant benefits from a slight water current that enhances the beauty of its undulating foliage.
Aquascaping & Usage
In aquascape layouts, H. corymbosa "angustifolia" can accentuate the background of large tanks or be used in central mound arrangements where its elegant leaves can sway gently in the water's current. It is suitable for semi-emersed setups in open tanks and can be placed in the background or midground of aquariums, complementing other plant varieties.
Propagation
Propagation of H. corymbosa "angustifolia" is straightforward and can be achieved by cutting and replanting lateral or top shoots. Regular pruning promotes bushier growth, and allowing the plant to grow above the water surface will trigger the formation of emersed air shoots and beautiful blue/violet flowers.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat in South-East Asia, Hygrophila corymbosa "angustifolia" thrives in both emersed and submersed conditions in slow to fast-flowing waters. The plant is adaptable to various water flow rates and can be found growing alongside other aquatic species in its native range.
