General Description

Hygrophila costata, also known as Glush weed, is a variable aquatic plant species that hails from the American tropics and subtropics. The plant's stem, when in the emersed form, is hairless or bears very short hairs, with lanceolate leaves resembling willow leaves. Small white flowers, over 10 in number, are clustered in leaf axils, followed by spindle-shaped, acuminate closely packed fruits.

Aquarium Suitability

Hygrophila costata is considered suitable for aquariums, offering a fast growth rate and the propensity to thrive in medium to high light conditions. With its classification as a midground or background plant, it is a valuable addition to Dutch-style aquatic layouts.

Demands and Hardiness (see table)

Maintaining a medium difficulty level, Hygrophila costata thrives in an aquarium environment with carbon dioxide levels ranging from 20-40mg/l, a pH value of 5-7, and a temperature range of 24-28°C. It requires moderate to high lighting and nutrient levels to flourish.

Aquascaping & Usage

Ideal for creating lush aquatic scapes, Hygrophila costata can be strategically placed in the background or midground sections of the tank, adding a dynamic and vibrant element to the overall design.

Propagation

This aquatic plant species can be propagated through seeds or cuttings, making it relatively easy for aquarists to expand their stock and maintain a healthy population within the aquarium habitat.

Habitat and Distribution

Originally native to the American tropics and subtropics, Hygrophila costata has been introduced to Australia, particularly Queensland, through the aquarium plant trade. Characterized by its invasive nature in Australian waters, this species demonstrates adaptability to different environments beyond its original habitat.
