General Description
Hygrophila difformis, commonly known as Water Wisteria, is a visually appealing aquatic plant that has been a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts for many years. Originating from South and South-East Asia, this plant thrives in boggy areas and is also utilized in traditional medicine in its native regions.
Aquarium Suitability
With a difficulty level categorized as very easy, Hygrophila difformis is suitable for aquariums and is particularly well-suited for newly established tanks due to its ability to absorb substantial amounts of nutrients. While it grows adequately under moderate lighting, providing more intense light, CO2 injection, and a rich nutrient supply results in vigorous growth rates. This plant is not sensitive to water hardness or pH levels, making it adaptable to various tank environments.
Demands and Hardiness
Hygrophila difformis exhibits fast growth and is classified as a background plant. It is capable of thriving in temperatures ranging from 24-28°C and can tolerate temperatures between 18-30°C. Carbon dioxide levels between 10-40mg/l, medium to high lighting, and nitrate levels of 10-50mg/l support its growth. Adequate iron (0.01-0.5mg/l) and potassium (5-30mg/l) supplementation are essential, while phosphates should be maintained between 0.1-3mg/l.
Aquascaping & Usage
In aquariums, Water Wisteria can be used to create a lush background due to its rapid growth and bushy nature. Its distinctive pinnate leaves provide an attractive contrast when paired with other aquatic plant species featuring different leaf structures. Frequent trimming helps maintain its bushy appearance and overall aesthetic appeal.
Propagation
Propagation of Hygrophila difformis is straightforward and similar to most stem plants. By snipping off the upper portion of the plant and replanting it in the substrate, new roots develop rapidly, and robust growth resumes. The remaining lower portion left in the substrate tends to produce numerous lateral shoots, contributing to the plant's bushiness.
Habitat and Distribution
Hygrophila difformis has a natural habitat in countries such as India, Myanmar, Thailand, and West Malaysia, particularly in wet, boggy areas. The submersed and emersed forms of this plant exhibit distinct characteristics, with emersed shoots producing unparted leaves, blue-violet flowers, and a creeping growth habit. In submerged conditions, the plant transitions to a different leaf form within a few weeks, shedding its emersed leaves.
