General Description

Hygrophila lancea, commonly known as Hygrophila sp. 'Sarawak', is a perennial aquatic plant with upright stems and lanceolate leaves. In its emersed form, it can reach a height of 60 cm, with opposite leaves around 5-10 cm long and 5-15 mm wide. The submersed form of H. lancea features lineal reddish leaves that are smaller and narrower compared to its emersed green leaves. Native to Sarawak, the Malaysian part of Borneo, this plant is also utilized as a leafy vegetable in China.

Aquarium Suitability

This plant, introduced in the USA under the name Hygrophila sp. 'Sarawak', is rarely commercially available. While it may still be relatively unknown in European aquariums, it is categorized as suitable for aquariums and can be located in the background or midground of a tank setup.

Demands and Hardiness

Hygrophila lancea falls under the medium difficulty category in terms of cultivation. It requires a temperature range of 24-28°C, with a tolerance between 18-30°C. The plant thrives in medium to high lighting conditions and prefers carbon dioxide levels between 20-40 mg/l. It can adapt to pH levels ranging from 5-7 and nutrient levels including a carbonate hardness of 2-12, iron concentration of 0.01-0.5 mg/l, nitrate levels of 10-50 mg/l, phosphate concentrations of 0.1-3 mg/l, and potassium levels of 5-30 mg/l.

Aquascaping & Usage

H. lancea can enhance aquascapes with its moderate growth rate and suitability as a background or midground plant. Its vibrant reddish submersed leaves add visual interest to aquarium setups.

Propagation

Propagation of Hygrophila lancea primarily occurs through cuttings. By taking stem cuttings and replanting them in suitable conditions, aquarists can propagate this plant effectively.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is indigenous to Sarawak, located in the Malaysian region of Borneo. Its natural habitat includes aquatic environments where it thrives in optimal conditions for growth and development.
