General Description
Hygrophila sp. 'Red' is a plant recently introduced from South-East Asia by the Oriental Aquarium in Singapore to the USA. With a reddish-brownish color, it features strong ramification and tends to develop long leaves. While its exact classification is uncertain, it is speculated to potentially belong to the genus Staurogyne. This plant is known for its impressive root system and ease of propagation through lateral shoots.
Aquarium Suitability
Hygrophila sp. 'Red' is considered suitable for aquariums, particularly as a foreground plant in medium to large tanks. It is a noteworthy addition due to its non-green coloration, providing striking contrast when grouped with light green or red plants. Its nutrient requirements are relatively undemanding, preferring a nutrient-rich substrate and good lighting for optimal growth.
Demands and Hardiness
The suitability of Hygrophila sp. 'Red' for aquariums includes medium difficulty in maintenance. It thrives in high light conditions and benefits from the addition of nitrates and phosphates to accelerate growth. This plant does not necessitate a CO2 injection and is known to display intense coloration with lower nutrient concentrations.
Aquascaping & Usage
Ideal for foreground and group planting, Hygrophila sp. 'Red' can serve as a groundcover in aquariums. Its distinctive reddish-brown color adds visual interest to aquascapes, creating a striking visual contrast when paired with lighter-colored neighboring plants.
Propagation
Propagation of Hygrophila sp. 'Red' is straightforward, involving the cutting of lateral shoots that can be replanted into the substrate. New shoots readily sprout from any remaining stem parts left in the substrate, enabling easy expansion of plant coverage within the aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
Hailing from South-East Asia, specifically introduced from Singapore to the USA, Hygrophila sp. 'Red' has not yet gained widespread popularity in the aquarium hobby, particularly in Europe. The plant's specific habitat preferences and natural distribution remain unexplored, with limited information regarding its outdoor growth characteristics.
