General Description
Staurogyne sp. "Bihar," originally thought to be a Hygrophila species, is a plant that likely belongs to the Staurogyne genus based on its flower characteristics. With partially lobed submersed leaves resembling Hygrophila pinnatifida, this aquatic plant has gained popularity in the aquarium hobby, particularly in the USA. Imported from the northeastern Indian state of Bihar, it remains relatively scarce in European aquarium circles.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums, Staurogyne sp. "Bihar" is occasionally available commercially and from other aquarists. Its medium difficulty level makes it a feasible option for aquarists with some experience in plant care.
Demands and Hardiness
With a fast growth rate, this plant requires a moderate to high light intensity level. It thrives in a temperature range of 22-28°C and can tolerate temperatures between 20-30°C. Carbon dioxide levels of 10-40mg/l are optimal, along with a pH range of 5-7.5. Additionally, it prefers a nitrate concentration of 10-50mg/l and phosphate levels between 0.1-3mg/l.
Aquascaping & Usage
Staurogyne sp. "Bihar" can be utilized for aquascaping purposes due to its lobed submersed leaves, adding texture and visual interest to the aquatic environment. It can be used in various aquascape designs to create depth and dimension.
Propagation
Propagation of Staurogyne sp. "Bihar" is primarily achieved through cuttings. By trimming and replanting the cuttings, aquarists can promote new growth and maintain the plant's appearance within the aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
Originating from the state of Bihar in northeastern India, Staurogyne sp. "Bihar" is believed to thrive in that region's natural habitats. While it has made its way into the aquarium hobby in the USA and Russia, its distribution in the rest of Europe is limited, suggesting its habitat and distribution are more prevalent in its native region.
