General Description

The Japanese sweet flag, Acorus gramineus, is a widely distributed plant found in regions spanning from Southeast Asia to northeastern India, China, Japan, Korea, and the Russian Far East. It typically grows as a rheophyte in areas with strong water currents, such as rocky forest streams and waterfalls, where it is exposed to swift flowing water during floods. This plant holds significance as a medicinal herb in its native habitat and has been utilized for ornamental purposes. Acorus gramineus is characterized by its ease of cultivation in moderately moist substrates and comes in several cultivars with variations in color and size.

Aquarium Suitability

While some cultivars of Acorus gramineus have been present in the aquarium trade for a considerable time, the general consensus is that this plant can tolerate immersion but may struggle to thrive underwater, ultimately leading to deterioration. However, certain variants, like the dwarf cultivar Acorus gramineus 'Pusillus', have shown suitability for aquariums when their rhizomes are not buried but anchored to objects like rocks or wood. The plant roots itself to these surfaces. Taller forms of A. gramineus such as 'Variegatus' are lesser known for their adaptability to long-term submersion. Varieties like these are recommended for use as emergent plants in open tanks or paludariums.

Demands and Hardiness

The Acorus gramineus typically grows very slowly and requires special attention when used in aquarium setups. It can withstand somewhat colder temperatures, although maintaining a temperature range of 18-23°C is recommended for optimal growth. Care should be taken as its tolerance limits extend from 4 to 28°C. Regarding water conditions, this plant thrives in a pH range of 5-7.5 with a carbon dioxide concentration of 10-40mg/l and a carbonate hardness of 0-14.

Aquascaping & Usage

This semi-emergent plant can add unique aesthetics to aquarium layouts when utilized as a submerged or emergent element in aquascaping projects. Its compact size and fan-like leaf arrangement make it suitable for creating visually appealing underwater landscapes. Acorus gramineus 'Pusillus' stands out for its potential as a decorative addition to open tanks or paludariums due to its smaller stature compared to other cultivars within the species.

Propagation

Propagation of Acorus gramineus is commonly achieved through methods such as splitting and cutting off daughter plants. By utilizing these techniques, aquarists can maintain and expand their population of Japanese rush plants within their aquarium setups.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Acorus gramineus thrives in regions characterized by fast-flowing water, including forest streams and waterfalls across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. The plant's adaptability to rheophytic conditions, where it experiences strong water currents during floods, has contributed to its widespread distribution in diverse geographical areas.
