General Description
Echinodorus grisebachii 'Amazonicus', commonly known as the Amazon Sword, is a species widely recognized for its various cultivars within the Echinodorus grisebachii species. Originating from the Brazilian Amazon depression, this plant thrives in submersed conditions in stagnant to slow-flowing water. It was first introduced to the market in 1938 and later correctly classified as E. amazonicus in 1970.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered easy to maintain, the Echinodorus grisebachii 'Amazonicus' is suitable for aquariums and can grow to heights exceeding 60 cm when cultivated submersed. It is categorized as a background plant due to its size and growth patterns, making it an excellent addition for aquarists looking to create lush greenery in their tanks.
Demands and Hardiness
With a fast growth rate, this plant requires medium to high lighting and nutrient-rich water conditions, including iron, nitrate, phosphate, and potassium within specific ranges (see table). It thrives in temperatures ranging from 22-26°C (72-79°F) with a tolerance level between 18-30°C (64-86°F). Although it is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates, it is well-suited for indoor aquariums.
Aquascaping & Usage
The narrow-leaved Amazon Sword is often used in aquascaping to create a vibrant background or midground focal point in planted tanks. Its lanceolate leaf blades give an aesthetic appeal, especially when positioned strategically among other aquatic plants. Additionally, it can serve as a natural shelter for fish and invertebrates in the aquarium.
Propagation
Propagation of Echinodorus grisebachii 'Amazonicus' can be achieved through proliferating inflorescences and rhizome division. Adventitious plants often develop on long flower stalks that originate from the parent plant, providing opportunities for propagation within the same aquarium environment.
Habitat and Distribution
The Amazon Sword is native to the Brazilian Amazon depression, specifically found in regions such as Rondônia and Pará, where it thrives in submersed conditions in shallow, slow-flowing waters. Its ability to adapt to varying water parameters and its widespread distribution make it a popular choice among aquarists aiming to replicate a natural aquatic ecosystem within their tanks.
