General Description
The Broadleaved Amazon Swordplant, scientifically known as Echinodorus grisebachii 'Bleherae', is part of the Echinodorus genus within the Alismataceae family. This fast-growing aquatic plant is a popular choice among aquarists and is frequently available commercially. It is often confused with Echinodorus paniculatus, a distinct plant not commonly found in the aquarium trade.
Aquarium Suitability
Echinodorus grisebachii 'Bleherae' is widely considered suitable for aquarium cultivation due to its adaptability to various environmental conditions. However, it is essential to acknowledge its potential size, as mature specimens can exceed 60 cm in height and width, making it more suitable for large tanks. For medium-sized tanks, an alternative is Echinodorus grisebachii 'Parviflorus', which has a maximum height of about 30 cm.
Demands and Hardiness
This plant is classified as easy to care for and thrives in medium to high light conditions. It requires a temperature range of 22-26°C and specific water parameters, including iron levels of 0.01-0.5 mg/l, nitrate levels of 10-50 mg/l, phosphate levels of 0.1-3 mg/l, and potassium levels of 5-30 mg/l. Despite its adaptability, the Broadleaved Amazon Swordplant is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates.
Aquascaping & Usage
In aquariums, the Echinodorus grisebachii 'Bleherae' is often used as a background plant due to its potential for substantial growth and impressive leaf count. Its rosette growth form adds a visually appealing dimension to aquascapes, especially in larger tanks where its size can be showcased effectively.
Propagation
Propagation of this plant is achieved through proliferating inflorescences and rhizome division. The plant produces adventitious plantlets on its inflorescence and can also propagate through division of its rhizome, making it relatively easy to propagate and expand in the aquarium setting.
Habitat and Distribution
While the exact native habitat of Echinodorus grisebachii 'Bleherae' remains uncertain, it is believed to be related to plants found in tropical America. The plant typically grows submerged for most of the year in its natural environment, with emersed leaves and flower stalks appearing during the low-water season. In aquariums, it remains below the waterline and only transitions to its land form when taken out of the water.
