General Description

Echinodorus maculatus 'Leopard' is a cultivated mutation of E. maculatus, also known as E. schlueteri, originating from the aquatic plant nursery of Hans Barth in Dessau, Germany in 1988. This variety is characterized by leaves with more prominent brown spots, displaying a distinct heart shape at the base in young plants. It grows slower compared to the original E. maculatus, with the brown spots persisting for an extended duration.

Aquarium Suitability

With a medium difficulty level, Echinodorus maculatus 'Leopard' is suitable for aquariums, particularly in small groups for the fore- and midground. Its growth is slow, making it ideal for aquarists willing to invest time in nurturing this plant. For detailed demands and hardiness, refer to the table.

Aquascaping & Usage

Best utilized in the midground of aquariums, Echinodorus maculatus 'Leopard' adds a unique aesthetic with its low, compact leaf rosettes. The intensive brown spots on its leaves offer a visually striking element to aquascapes, especially when grouped together.

Propagation

This plant species can be propagated through proliferating inflorescences, rhizome division, splitting, and by cutting off daughter plants. These methods enable aquarists to expand their collection of E. maculatus 'Leopard' within the aquarium environment.

Habitat and Distribution

Being a cultivar, Echinodorus maculatus 'Leopard' does not have a natural habitat or distribution outside of cultivation. It thrives in aquatic environments provided with the appropriate care and conditions necessary for its growth and development.
