General Description

Echinodorus major, also known as E. leopoldina, is a medium to large-sized rosulate plant native to eastern Brazil, typically found submersed in shallow rivulets. It features light green, translucent leaves with a narrow oblanceolate shape, undulated margins, and a rhizome structure. This plant can reach a maximum height of 60 cm and is characterized by its unique leaf structure, with the widest point above the middle and an obtuse leaf tip.

Aquarium Suitability

Echinodorus major is considered an easy plant to care for in aquariums, making it suitable for beginners. It thrives in nutrient-rich substrates and light intensities of 0.4 watts per liter or higher. While the plant does not require CO2 supplementation, growth can be significantly enhanced if provided. Regular fertilization with iron and trace elements is recommended to promote healthy growth.

Demands and Hardiness

E. major does well in aquariums with medium to high light levels and water temperatures ranging from 24-26°C. It is adaptable to varying lighting conditions with proper substrate fertilization. This plant is not winter-hardy and is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates. It can be propagated easily through adventitious plants on flower stalks or rhizomes, making it a favorable choice for aquarium enthusiasts.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquascaping, Echinodorus major is commonly used in the midground to background of tanks. Under strong lighting, it can serve as a striking solitary plant with its distinctive texture and light green color. It complements red plants like Rotala macrandra and pairs well with other green plants, adding a vibrant contrast to the aquarium setting.

Propagation

Propagation of E. major can be accomplished through proliferating inflorescences and adventitious plants developing on flower stalks or rhizomes. Plantlets form easily when the stalks are kept submerged, and the method requires minimal effort. Trimming old leaves and promoting the growth of new shoots can help maintain the plant's health and appearance in the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

Originating from eastern Brazil, Echinodorus major thrives in submersed conditions in shallow water habitats like rivulets. While it is popular in the aquarium trade, occurrences in its natural habitat are limited. The plant's adaptability to varying water conditions and ease of propagation contribute to its continued presence in the hobbyist market.
