General Description

Various authors classify Echinodorus osiris, also known as Melon Sword, as a highly variable species within the genus Echinodorus, potentially being a natural hybrid of E. uruguayensis. Collected from few locations in southeastern Brazil, it thrives in rivers with a strong current. Recognized as one of the earliest reddish Echinodorus varieties introduced to the aquarium hobby, E. osiris predates the cultivation of red Echinodorus hybrids.

Aquarium Suitability

Suitable for aquariums, Melon Sword can be an appealing addition to freshwater tanks. With a fast growth rate, it is an easy plant to care for, fitting well in the background of aquascapes. It can withstand somewhat colder temperatures, but caution is advised. Refer to the provided table for specific water conditions and temperature tolerance.

Demands and Hardiness

This aquatic plant, tolerant of varying water parameters, requires medium to high light levels to thrive. It proliferates through methods like proliferating inflorescences, rhizome division, splitting, and detaching daughter plants.

Aquascaping & Usage

Primarily used in aquariums as a background plant, the Melon Sword adds lush greenery to aquascapes. Its rapid growth and rosette form make it a popular choice for aquarists looking to create a dense background.

Propagation

Echinodorus osiris can be propagated through methods such as proliferating inflorescences, rhizome division, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. These techniques allow for the easy expansion of the plant within an aquarium setup.

Habitat and Distribution

Originally found in select locations in southeastern Brazil, Melon Sword thrives in rivers characterized by strong currents. Its natural habitat provides insights into the plant's preferences for water flow and environmental conditions.
