General Description

The plant known as Echinodorus × schlueteri is a hybrid resulting from Echinodorus maculatus and the newly described Echinodorus reptilis from southeastern South America. When cultivated submersed, it is a relatively low-growing plant with light to medium green unicolored leaves. The emersed form can reach over 30 cm in height, featuring roundish-ovate leaves with a heart-shaped base and thin, low-lying inflorescences with usually no more than two whorls of flowers.

Aquarium Suitability

Echinodorus × schlueteri is considered easy to grow in aquariums. It is suitable for midground and foreground placements, making it a good choice for nano tanks and group setups. It thrives in medium-high lighting conditions and requires a temperature range of 20-28°C. The plant can propagate through proliferating inflorescences, Rhizomteilung, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants.

Demands and Hardiness

Echinodorus × schlueteri has moderate demands, with optimal water conditions including a pH range of 5-7, carbon dioxide levels of 10-40mg/l, nitrate levels of 10-50mg/l, and phosphate levels of 0.1-3mg/l. It can tolerate temperatures between 15-30°C and requires moderate amounts of iron, potassium, and carbonate hardness in the water.

Aquascaping & Usage

This plant adds a visually appealing touch to aquascapes with its low-growing rosette form and unicolored leaves. Its compact size makes it suitable for creating visual interest in the midground or foreground of aquariums, especially in smaller setups like nano tanks.

Propagation

Echinodorus × schlueteri can be propagated by proliferating inflorescences, Rhizomteilung, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. This easy propagation makes it a convenient choice for aquarists looking to expand their plant population.

Habitat and Distribution

Being a hybrid plant, Echinodorus × schlueteri is not known to occur naturally in the wild. It likely originated from cultivation practices, combining traits of Echinodorus maculatus and Echinodorus reptilis.
