General Description

Echinodorus 'Smaragd' is a selectively bred plant by Hans Barth, characterized by its smaller growth as a green mutation of E. 'Rubin'. It features linear leaves reminiscent of E. uruguayensis, with a medium green hue and lighter veins, akin to its 'Rubin' parent. This variety produces leaf blades up to 15 cm in length and 2.5-3 cm in width, with a leaf stalk reaching up to 10 cm.

Aquarium Suitability

Due to its easy maintenance and moderate light requirements, Echinodorus 'Smaragd' is suitable for aquariums. It serves as an excellent alternative to larger Echinodorus uruguayensis varieties, particularly in medium-sized tanks.

Demands and Hardiness

E. 'Smaragd' thrives in environments with medium to high light intensity and prefers carbon dioxide levels ranging from 10-40mg/l. It can tolerate temperatures between 20-28°C, with a wide range of temperature tolerance from 15-30°C. This plant has a moderate nutrient demand, requiring nitrate levels between 10-50mg/l, phosphate levels of 0.1-3mg/l, and potassium levels of 5-30mg/l. It can adapt to a pH range of 5-7 and carbonate hardness up to 21.

Aquascaping & Usage

This plant is suitable for both background and midground placement within aquariums, contributing to the overall aesthetic with its distinctive foliage and compact size.

Propagation

Echinodorus 'Smaragd' propagates through proliferating inflorescences and rhizome division, offering aquarists opportunities for cultivation and expansion within their tanks.

Habitat and Distribution

Originating from the breeding efforts of Hans Barth, the exact natural habitat and distribution of Echinodorus 'Smaragd' are not specified, as it is a cultivated aquatic plant variety.
