General Description

Echinodorus sp. "macrophyllus," often confused with other species, originates from southern Brazil and is commonly sold under the misapplied name Echinodorus macrophyllus or E. "radicans." This plant is characterized by its large, wide leaves that grow tall above the waterline, developing emersed leaves even in aquariums. It is a fast-growing plant that thrives under short-day conditions with a dark nocturnal phase of at least 13 hours, but it is mainly recommended for use in open tanks or large paludariums.

Aquarium Suitability

With an indication of "yes" for aquarium compatibility, Echinodorus sp. "macrophyllus" is considered suitable for aquatic environments. However, it is primarily recommended as a decorative emersed plant in spacious tanks due to its large size and growth habits.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquascaping, Echinodorus sp. "macrophyllus" can be utilized as a semi-emersed plant for background decoration in open tanks. Its distinctive appearance, with large heart-shaped leaves reaching out above the water surface, adds a striking visual element to aquatic setups.

Propagation

The plant propagates through proliferating inflorescences, rhizome division, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. Under favorable conditions, it produces overhanging flower stalks with white blossoms and numerous adventitious plants that serve as propagation sources.

Habitat and Distribution

The exact natural habitat of cultivated Echinodorus sp. "macrophyllus" specimens remains unknown. However, the plant's origin in southern Brazil suggests a preference for tropical or subtropical environments, reflecting its adaptability to warm water temperatures in aquaria.
