General Description
The Echinodorus sp. "muricatus" is commonly found in the aquarium trade under this name, although it is believed to actually belong to the complex of E. cordifolius or may be a hybrid. It is a fast-growing plant that forms a large, wide leaf rosette in the aquarium. The submersed leaves are longish-ovate-lanceolate with a medium green color, resembling the leaves of some Echinodorus uruguayensis varieties.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered an easy plant to care for, Echinodorus sp. "muricatus" thrives in various environments. It can be cultivated emersed with wide, medium-sized leaf rosettes or submersed in the aquarium where it grows well. This plant is suitable for semi-emersed setups in open tanks and works effectively as a background plant.
Demands and Hardiness
With a fast growth rate, the Echinodorus sp. "muricatus" requires medium to high lighting and a temperature range of 20-28°C. It can adapt to pH levels between 5-8 and prefers carbon dioxide levels of 10-40mg/l. The plant's tolerance to temperature ranges from 15-30°C and it can withstand varying carbonate hardness levels of 0-21.
Aquascaping & Usage
Due to its large, wide leaf rosette, Echinodorus sp. "muricatus" adds a lush and vibrant look to aquascapes, especially in the background of aquariums. Its long, flower-carrying stalks make propagation efficient and easy, allowing for effortless maintenance and propagation in aquatic environments.
Propagation
Propagation of Echinodorus sp. "muricatus" can be achieved through proliferating inflorescences, rhizomteilung, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. The plant's adventitious plants carried on long flower stalks aid in the efficient propagation process, making it a popular choice among aquarists.
Habitat and Distribution
The exact habitat and distribution of Echinodorus sp. "muricatus" in the wild remains unknown. However, in the aquarium setting, it demonstrates versatility and adaptability to various water conditions, making it a favorable choice for aquarists looking to introduce a vibrant and easy-to-care-for plant into their setups.
