General Description

Helanthium bolivianum "latifolius" is a plant from the family Alismataceae, previously known as Echinodorus latifolius, belonging to the Helanthium genus. It is often confused with other plants from the group of H. bolivianum, such as H. bolivianum "quadricostatus", due to its stiff leaf rosettes and narrowly lanceolate emersed leaf blades with an acute tip. The plant forms dense grass-like lawns when used in aquascaping.

Aquarium Suitability

Aquarists can find Helanthium bolivianum "latifolius" suitable for their tanks, as it is classified as an easy plant to care for and has a fast growth rate. It can be used in midground, nano tanks, and as a foreground or ground cover within groups.

Demands and Hardiness

Helanthium bolivianum "latifolius" requires medium to high light, a pH range of 5-7.5, and a temperature between 20-26°C. It tolerates a broader temperature range of 10-30°C and thrives in water conditions with 10-40mg/l of CO2, 0-14 dKH of carbonate hardness, 0.01-0.5mg/l of iron, 10-50mg/l of nitrate, 0.1-3mg/l of phosphate, and 5-30mg/l of potassium. It is not suitable for outdoor use in colder climates.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquascaping, Helanthium bolivianum "latifolius" serves as a versatile plant that can contribute to creating visually appealing layouts, particularly for establishing a grass-like lawn effect within the tank. It is ideal for enhancing the midground and foreground areas, especially in nano tanks, due to its rosette growth pattern.

Propagation

This plant reproduces through runners, which are horizontal stems extending from the mother plant to develop new offshoots. Aquarists can propagate Helanthium bolivianum "latifolius" by separating these runners and planting them in desired locations within the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

Natively, *Helanthium bolivianum "latifolius" is found in South America. It thrives in aquatic habitats such as rivers, streams, and marshes, where it contributes to the formation of dense vegetation in submerged areas. Its distribution includes regions like Bolivia, from which its species name is derived.
