General Description
The Helanthium bolivianum 'Vesuvius,' commonly known as the Corkscrew sword, is a unique aquatic plant that is the first cultivar from the group of runner-forming "grasslike" sword plants. Originally selected from mother plants of Helanthium bolivianum "Angustifolius," this cultivar was bred by Eu Kwee Hwang in the Oriental Aquarium nursery in Singapore. It belongs to the family Alismataceae and is classified under the genus Helanthium.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered an easy plant to care for, the Corkscrew sword is suitable for aquariums with its fast growth rate. It can be utilized in various tank positions, serving as a background, midground, or even in nano tanks. Its compatibility with aquarium settings makes it a popular choice among aquatic plant enthusiasts. (see table)
Demands and Hardiness
Requiring medium to high light levels and a temperature range of 20-26°C, the Corkscrew sword thrives in an environment with 10-40mg/l of carbon dioxide and a pH value between 5-7.5. It is not suitable for outdoor use in colder climates due to its unsuitability for winter hardiness. (see table)
Aquascaping & Usage
The unique corkscrew shape of the leaves of the Helanthium bolivianum 'Vesuvius' adds an interesting dimension to aquascaping designs, particularly in creating texture and depth. Its versatility allows for creative placement in the aquarium, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the aquatic environment.
Propagation
This aquatic plant propagates through runners, producing new plantlets that can be separated and replanted to expand the population of Corkscrew swords in the aquarium. Regular pruning and maintenance can help control the spread and growth of the plant within the tank.
Habitat and Distribution
Originally derived from Helanthium bolivianum "Angustifolius," the Corkscrew sword has no natural occurrence in the wild and was selectively bred for aquarium cultivation in the Oriental Aquarium nursery in Singapore. The wild type, Helanthium bolivianum ''Angustifolius,'' originates from tropical South America, where similar species of the plant can be found in its natural habitat.
