General Description
Helanthium tenellum, commonly known as the pygmy chain sword, is a small species belonging to the runner-forming sword plants. It is highly variable and is often found in trade originating from the American tropics, particularly Brazil. This plant features narrow, pointed, medium-olive green or reddish submersed leaves that can grow up to 6-10 cm in length, sometimes even longer, with a width of about 1.5 mm. Another form of the plant, originating from North America, has light green leaves that are slightly wider at around 2 mm width and have their widest part below the middle.
Aquarium Suitability
With a medium difficulty level, Helanthium tenellum is frequently available commercially and suitable for aquariums, especially nano tanks. It is recommended for use as a foreground or ground cover in groups, as it forms a grass-like lawn, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the aquarium.
Demands and Hardiness
Helanthium tenellum has a fast growth rate and requires specific water conditions to thrive. It prefers a temperature range of 18-28°C and can tolerate temperatures between 10-35°C. The plant thrives in medium to high light conditions and requires a pH range of 5-7.5. Additionally, it needs carbon dioxide levels of 20-40 mg/l, carbonate hardness of 0-14, iron levels of 0.01-0.5 mg/l, nitrate levels of 10-50 mg/l, phosphate levels of 0.1-3 mg/l, and potassium levels of 5-30 mg/l.
Aquascaping & Usage
Helanthium tenellum is ideal for aquascaping, particularly in creating lush foregrounds or as a carpeting plant in nano tanks. Its ability to form a dense carpet makes it a popular choice among aquarists looking to create a vibrant and visually appealing aquatic landscape.
Propagation
This plant propagates through runners, enabling it to spread and form dense colonies in suitable conditions.
Habitat and Distribution
Helanthium tenellum is native to the American tropics, with a prevalent variety originating from Brazil. It can also be found in North America, although it is less commonly cultivated today. The plant thrives in aquatic habitats, where it forms intricate underwater landscapes with its grass-like appearance.
