General Description
The Dwarf Arrowhead, scientifically known as Sagittaria subulata "Pusilla," is a small aquatic plant belonging to the Alismataceae family. It is a rosette plant that can grow both emersed and submersed, with medium growth difficulty. This plant is part of the seed plants' major group, specifically flowering plants within the Alismatales order.
Aquarium Suitability
Dwarf Arrowhead is considered easy to care for and is suitable for aquariums. It can be used in various ways, such as in midground or foreground placements, especially in nano tanks. It can be utilized individually or in groups, serving as a ground cover to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the aquarium.
Demands and Hardiness
The plant has adaptable water conditions, requiring a pH range of 5-9, temperatures between 18-28°C, and the ability to tolerate temperatures from 4-30°C. It thrives in a low to high light environment and can benefit from carbon dioxide supplementation ranging from 5-40mg/l. Additionally, it can withstand colder temperatures to some extent, although caution is advised.
Aquascaping & Usage
In aquascaping, Dwarf Arrowhead can be used to create lush and natural-looking underwater landscapes. Its ability to grow as a ground cover makes it ideal for adding texture and dimension to the foreground of aquariums, especially in smaller setups like nano tanks.
Propagation
Propagation of Dwarf Arrowhead occurs through the development of runners. As the plant spreads, new shoots emerge from the existing plant, allowing for easy multiplication and expansion within the aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, Sagittaria subulata "Pusilla" is typically found in freshwater environments with varying water conditions. It has a widespread distribution, and while occasionally available commercially, this particular variety is not as commonly cultivated as other forms of Sagittaria subulata.
