General Description
There are around 170 known species of the genus Alternanthera. Alternanthera reineckii, also known as Alternanthera reineckii "Rosaefolia," is one of the few species in the genus that can grow entirely submerged. Originating from South America, particularly along riversides in flood-prone areas during the rainy season, this plant features vibrant reddish-brown and reddish hues, with purple undersides on its leaves. It is a medium-sized plant, reaching heights of 20-40cm and widths of 10-15cm.
Aquarium Suitability
This plant is suitable for aquariums and is frequently available commercially. It is categorized as a medium difficulty plant and can be propagated through cuttings. Its vibrant colors make it a popular choice for accents, background, midground, or in a Dutch-style aquascape.
Demands and Hardiness
Alternanthera reineckii "Rosaefolia" thrives in medium to high light intensities (0.4-1 watt per liter) and benefits from CO2 fertilization. It can adapt to a wide range of water conditions, including soft to hard water with pH levels between 5-7. However, it prefers slightly acidic water and nutrient-rich environments with high nitrate (10mg/l and over) and phosphate (0.5 mg/l and over) levels. It does not tolerate low nutrient content well and may benefit from substrate fertilization.
Aquascaping & Usage
With its colorful foliage, Alternanthera reineckii "Rosaefolia" is an excellent choice for adding visual interest to an aquascape. Its red tones provide striking accents, especially when planted in groups. In Dutch-style tanks, this plant is particularly popular for introducing vibrant red hues.
Propagation
Propagation of Alternanthera reineckii "Rosaefolia" is relatively simple and can be done through cuttings. By trimming off the shoot tip and replanting it into the substrate, lateral shoots will develop, resulting in a bushier appearance.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Alternanthera reineckii "Rosaefolia" is found in South America along riversides that are periodically flooded during the rainy season. Although not widely spread in natural aquaria, it is a favorite in Dutch tanks, where it is commonly used to create colorful contrasts amongst green aquatic plants.
