General Description
Alternanthera sessilis, commonly known as Sessile joyweed, is a plant belonging to the family Amaranthaceae. It is found in various tropical and subtropical regions across the globe, typically in moist-wet disturbed areas such as marshes, roadsides, and gardens. There is a dark red variant of this species that is popular as an ornamental plant and is also sometimes marketed as an aquarium plant. However, unlike Alternanthera reineckii, A. sessilis is not suitable for submersed cultivation in aquariums. When grown underwater, it develops long internodes, small leaves, and an abundance of roots high on the plant. On the contrary, emersed cultivation of A. sessilis is straightforward, making it a striking addition to paludaria or terraria setups.
Aquarium Suitability
Although Alternanthera sessilis is sometimes sold as an aquarium plant, it is deemed unsuitable for submersed cultivation due to its elongated internodes, small leaves, and excessive root growth when submerged. For optimal growth and aesthetics in aquariums, it is recommended to consider other aquatic plant species more suitable for underwater settings.
Demands and Hardiness
The table provided contains information on the plant's winter hardiness and propagation methods. It indicates that A. sessilis is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates and can be propagated through cuttings.
Aquascaping & Usage
In the context of aquascaping, Alternanthera sessilis can add a touch of distinctiveness to paludarium or terrarium setups where its dark red hue and easy emersed cultivation can be a valuable decorative element. However, for aquariums focusing on submersed aquatic plants, other more suitable options are advised.
Propagation
Propagation of A. sessilis can be achieved through cuttings, offering an easy method to increase the plant population. This approach allows for efficient reproduction and maintenance of desired characteristics in the propagated specimens.
Habitat and Distribution
Alternanthera sessilis is widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, thriving in areas with moist-wet conditions and disturbances. Its presence can be observed in various habitats, including marshes, roadsides, and gardens, where it contributes to the local flora diversity.
