General Description

Crinum calamistratum, also known as Crinum calamistratum Bogner & Heine, is a plant belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. This slow-growing plant forms rosettes and onion-like structures, making it suitable for background, midground, and specimen plant placement in aquariums. It is native to West Cameroon, near Kumba, and falls under the major group of seed plants, specifically flowering plants (Angiosperms).

Aquarium Suitability

This aquatic plant is considered easy to care for and is frequently available commercially for aquarium enthusiasts. With its medium-high light requirements and preference for carbon dioxide levels ranging from 10-40mg/l, C. calamistratum thrives in aquarium setups with a pH value between 5.5-8 and a temperature of 23-26°C. However, it is not winter-hardy for outdoor use in colder climates.

Demands and Hardiness

Crinum calamistratum has moderate demands in terms of lighting and nutrient levels, requiring a carbonate hardness of 2-12, nitrate levels between 10-50mg/l, phosphate levels from 0.1-3mg/l, and potassium concentrations of 5-30mg/l. Despite its tolerance to a temperature range of 12-30°C, it is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates.

Aquascaping & Usage

Due to its rosette and onion-like growth pattern, C. calamistratum adds visual interest to aquascapes, serving as a focal point or background element. Aquarists can use this plant effectively in planted tank designs to create a lush and natural underwater environment.

Propagation

Propagation of Crinum calamistratum can be achieved through splitting and cutting off daughter plants, making it a rewarding addition for hobbyists looking to expand their aquatic plant collection.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat of West Cameroon, near Kumba, C. calamistratum thrives in aquatic environments with specific temperature and water parameter ranges similar to those found in suitable aquarium setups. This plant's distribution in the wild showcases its adaptability to varying conditions within its native region.
