General Description
Aponogeton eggersii, also known as Eggers' Aponogeton, is a high-growing aquatic plant native to the Anove River in eastern Madagascar. It features long leathery band-shaped submersed leaves in shades of light to dark olive green with undulating margins. This relatively new species was first introduced to Germany in 1998 by Gerd Eggers and later scientifically described in 2001 by Josef Bogner and H.W.E. van Bruggen.
Aquarium Suitability
Aponogeton eggersii is suitable for aquariums and is considered an easy plant to cultivate. However, its tall height necessitates placement in very high tanks to accommodate its growth. It does not require a resting phase, making it convenient for aquarists to maintain.
Demands and Hardiness
This species of Aponogeton has an easy difficulty level and grows relatively fast. It thrives in water temperatures ranging from 20-30°C and prefers medium to high light levels. Additionally, it requires carbon dioxide levels of 10-40mg/l and is tolerant of a pH range between 5-7.
Aquascaping & Usage
Aponogeton eggersii is ideal for background placement in aquascape designs due to its size and growth pattern. Its long, lush leaves can create a striking visual impact in the rear of the aquarium, adding depth and a natural feel to the underwater environment.
Propagation
Propagation of Aponogeton eggersii is primarily achieved through seeds. By collecting and germinating the plant's seeds, aquarists can cultivate new specimens to expand their collection or share with other enthusiasts.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Anove River in the eastern region of Madagascar, Aponogeton eggersii thrives in the unique aquatic habitats of this area. Its distribution is limited to this specific location, adding to its rarity and desirability among aquatic plant enthusiasts.
