General Description

Aponogeton madagascariensis, scientifically known as Aponogeton madagascariensis (Mirb.) H. Bruggen, belongs to the Aponogetonaceae family within the order Alismatales. This aquatic plant, native to Madagascar, features a distinctive lacy leaf structure and has posed a challenge to hobbyists since the 1950s. There are several varieties of Aponogeton madagascariensis, each with unique leaf characteristics and flower colors, such as var. henkelianus, var. major, and var. madagascariensis.

Aponogeton madagascariensis is suitable for aquariums, but it requires specific conditions to thrive. It is considered a challenging plant to maintain, especially due to its demanding care requirements. The plant's size makes it unsuitable for tanks smaller than 500 liters, and it thrives in substrates poor in nutrients. Adequate lighting, CO2 fertilization, and a balance of micro- and macronutrients are crucial for its growth.

Demands and Hardiness

The plant requires medium light intensity, direct light exposure, CO2 fertilization, and specific nutrient levels to flourish. When placed in the aquarium, ensure that the plant's leaves do not reach the water surface to prevent hindered growth.

Propagation

Propagation of Aponogeton madagascariensis occurs through seeds. The plant produces seeds in watertight pods that float on the water's surface before releasing seedlings that sink to root. Under ideal conditions, seedlings can reach a length of approximately 10 cm within 3-4 months. Replanting young plants when they reach the appropriate size is recommended for their continued growth.
