General Description

Aponogeton rigidifolius, also known as stiff-leaved Aponogeton, is a plant species native to the southwest region of Sri Lanka. It features banded undulate submersed leaves that can grow to over 60 cm in length. Unlike most Aponogeton species, it does not produce a bulb but instead has a long, thin, ramifying rhizome.

Aquarium Suitability

Aponogeton rigidifolius is suitable for aquariums and is categorized as a demanding plant that thrives in well-lit conditions. It is recommended to provide CO2 injection and good water movement for optimal cultivation. For specific water conditions, refer to the table below.

Demands and Hardiness

This plant is classified as difficult to grow and maintains a slow growth rate. It requires a moderate to high light intensity, along with carbon dioxide levels ranging from 20-40mg/l and a temperature between 23-28°C. It is not suitable for outdoor use in colder climates.

Aquascaping & Usage

Aponogeton rigidifolius is commonly used in aquariums as a background or midground plant due to its tall and broad growth pattern. Its banded leaves add texture and visual interest to the aquascape.

Propagation

Propagation of Aponogeton rigidifolius can be achieved through rhizome division, splitting, or by cutting off daughter plants. Care should be taken to ensure the new plants receive adequate light and nutrients for healthy growth.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is typically found in slow to fast flowing waters in the south-west region of Sri Lanka. Its natural habitat provides insights into its preferences for water conditions and lighting in an aquarium setting.
