General Description

Aponogeton robinsonii, also known as Robinson's Aponogeton, is a plant that is relatively uncommon in the aquarium trade. It originates from central and southern Vietnam, as well as Laos, where it can be found in slow-flowing rivers with very soft water on either muddy or rocky substrates. This plant typically produces floating leaves, although some variations develop long, ribbon-shaped submerged leaves without true floating leaves. It was first brought into the hobby by Ingo Hertel in 1981, and there are variations that were initially labeled as A. robinsonii but are now recognized as Aponogeton eberhardtii based on recent taxonomic studies.

Aquarium Suitability

Aponogeton robinsonii is suitable for aquariums, with both the actual A. robinsonii and A. eberhardtii being able to grow continuously under aquarium conditions without requiring a dormant stage. These plants are known to flower frequently, with inflorescences bearing white, fragrant flowers arranged unilaterally along the spikes. The species thrives in medium to high lighting and requires a temperature range of 22-28°C.

Demands and Hardiness

This species of Aponogeton is considered easy to care for in aquarium setups. It exhibits fast growth and is categorized as a rooting plant with floating leaves, making it ideal for background placement in tanks. The water parameters suited for A. robinsonii include medium-high lighting levels, a pH range of 6-7.5, and a temperature range of 22-28°C. For optimal growth, it requires a carbon dioxide level of 10-40mg/l, a carbonate hardness of 4-12, and nitrate levels between 10-50mg/l.

Aquascaping & Usage

Robinson's Aponogeton is commonly used in aquariums as a background plant due to its rosette and tuber growth habits. Its medium to olive green colored leaves add a lush aesthetic to aquascapes. The plant is best placed in the background of aquariums to provide height and depth to the overall layout.

Propagation

Propagation of Aponogeton robinsonii can be achieved through rhizome division, seeds, splitting, or by cutting off daughter plants. This ease of propagation makes it a popular choice for aquarists looking to expand their underwater vegetation.

Habitat and Distribution

It is native to central and southern Vietnam, as well as Laos, where it thrives in slow-flowing rivers with soft water conditions. While typically found in rivers with muddy or rocky substrates, this plant has adapted well to aquarium environments and can be cultivated successfully under suitable conditions.
