General Description
Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia, belonging to the Araceae family, is the largest variety of the Anubias barteri species. Found predominantly in West Africa, specifically Cameroon and Southeastern Nigeria, this plant thrives in various locations such as the banks of rivers, shallow-water zones of rapidly-flowing rivers, and even tropical rainforest waterfalls. Growing either rooted in the ground or attached to rocks, this plant features leaf blades that can reach up to 24 cm in length, with a narrow-wide ovate shape that evolves into a distinctly heart-shaped base as the plant matures. With smooth or slightly undulate leaf margins, this variety is cultivated in several different forms, with notable ones such as the "1705" variant.
Aquarium Suitability
The Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia is deemed suitable for aquariums, offering an easy care level and slow growth rate. It is categorized as an epiphytic plant, ideal for hardscape attachment, cichlid-proof, and suitable for background or midground placement. Its water conditions require a temperature range between 22-26°C, with a tolerance range of 12-30°C. Additionally, it thrives in varying light levels from low to high and prefers carbon dioxide levels between 5-40mg/L.
Demands and Hardiness
Requiring a carbonate hardness of 0-15, nitrate levels of 10-50mg/L, phosphate levels between 0.1-3mg/L, iron concentrations of 0.01-0.5mg/L, and potassium levels of 5-30mg/L, this plant can adapt to pH values from 5 to 8. With unsuitability for outdoor use in colder climates, it is best suited for indoor aquarium settings.
Aquascaping & Usage
With its epiphytic nature, Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia is a versatile plant for aquascaping, offering a unique aesthetic appeal when attached to hardscape elements. Its suitability as a background or midground plant adds depth and texture to aquascape layouts, while also providing a safe option for tanks housing cichlids.
Propagation
Propagation of Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia can be achieved through rhizome division, splitting, or by cutting off daughter plants. This plant's slow growth rate allows for controlled propagation and expansion within an aquarium setting.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia thrives in warm, tropical regions, predominantly alongside rivers and waterfalls in West Africa. Its distribution spans countries like Cameroon and Southeastern Nigeria, where it forms extensive populations in sunny-shaded locations on the banks of water bodies and on rocks within rapidly-flowing water environments.
