General Description

The Golden Anubias (Anubias barteri var. nana 'Golden Heart') is a cultivar derived from Anubias barteri var. nana, native to Cameroon. Belonging to the Araceae family, it is a slow-growing plant with a height ranging from 5-10cm and a width of 5-20cm. Its vibrant yellow-green leaves make it a striking addition to aquariums.

Aquarium Suitability

The Golden Anubias is considered very easy to care for in aquariums, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Occasionally available commercially, it is a popular choice for nano tanks, midground, and foreground placements, and is a cichlid-proof plant. Its epiphytic nature allows it to grow on hardscapes, enhancing visual appeal. Its adaptability to a variety of light conditions makes it versatile in different tank setups. (See table)

Demands and Hardiness

The plant thrives in temperatures between 22-26°C and can tolerate a range of 12-30°C. It requires a pH range of 5-8 and prefers low to high lighting. In terms of nutrient levels, it can withstand carbon dioxide levels of 5-40mg/l, nitrate levels of 10-50mg/l, phosphate levels of 0.1-3mg/l, and potassium levels of 5-30mg/l. It is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates due to its winter hardiness.

Aquascaping & Usage

Golden Anubias adds a pop of color as an accent plant in aquascaping, with its yellow-green foliage standing out in aquariums. Its compact size and epiphytic growth make it ideal for creating visually appealing layouts in tanks. It is commonly used to complement rocks and wood, adding a touch of brightness to aquascapes.

Propagation

Propagation of the Golden Anubias can be achieved through rhizome division, splitting, or cutting off daughter plants. This straightforward propagation method allows for the expansion of plant stock in the aquarium without much difficulty.

Habitat and Distribution

The Golden Anubias originates from the cultivated variety of Anubias barteri var. nana, which is found in Cameroon. In the wild, it thrives in tropical regions with favorable conditions for its growth. Its adaptability to aquarium environments has made it a sought-after plant among aquarists worldwide.
