General Description
The triploid form of Cryptocoryne beckettii, also known as Cryptocoryne petchii, is a widely spread aquatic plant that belongs to the C. wendtii group. With its brown-green rosettes and slightly wavy leaf rims, this species is known for its beauty and adaptability to various aquarium conditions.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums, Cryptocoryne beckettii is an easy-to-cultivate plant that has been popular in aquaristics for over 60 years. It adapts well to both soft and hard water, and while it grows better under more intense light, it can thrive in a range of lighting conditions. Nutrient-rich substrates enhance its growth, but it can also grow sufficiently without additional fertilization and CO2.
Demands and Hardiness
The plant requires a water temperature between 22-26°C and a pH level of 5-8. It has a wide temperature tolerance range of 15-30°C. Additionally, it can tolerate varying levels of carbon dioxide, carbonate hardness, iron, nitrate, phosphate, and potassium. However, it is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates.
Aquascaping & Usage
Most Cryptocoryne species from Sri Lanka, like C. beckettii, are ideal for the midground of an aquarium. They can be kept well-trimmed to maintain their appearance. The reddish-brown leaves of C. beckettii provide a striking contrast against other aquatic plants, making it a visually appealing addition to the aquarium.
Propagation
Propagation of Cryptocoryne beckettii is relatively straightforward. The plant forms runners on its rhizome, which can be cut off and replanted to propagate new plants. Additionally, it can be cultivated emersed in moist and nutrient-rich substrates, where it is known to flower. Daily spraying with water is recommended when cultivating it emersed.
Habitat and Distribution
Originally described as a separate species, Cryptocoryne petchii, C. beckettii is native to Sri Lanka and is commonly found in aquatic habitats in the region. It has become a popular choice among aquarists due to its ease of cultivation and striking appearance in aquariums.
