General Description
Cryptocoryne cordata var. blassii, a member of the Araceae family, is an aquatic plant originating from swamplands in southern Thailand, Malaysia, and Borneo. It is a popular variety within the Cryptocoryne genus, known for its undemanding nature and slow growth. The plant features singular greenish-red leaves with dark red undersides, making it a visually appealing choice for aquariums.
Aquarium Suitability
This plant is classified as easy to care for in aquariums. It thrives in low to medium light conditions, ideally receiving 0.25-0.5 watts per liter. While it does not require additional CO2 supplementation, its growth may benefit from it. With a preference for hard water, a nutrient-rich substrate is essential for reaching its maximum height potential of around 20 cm in an aquarium. Regular maintenance includes trimming off yellowing or decaying leaves.
Demands and Hardiness
Cryptocoryne cordata var. blassii is well-suited for emersed cultivation with low light and high humidity. In its submerged form, it is recommended for use in the middleground of aquariums due to its unique leaf structure and coloration. The plant can create visually striking underwater "streets" in Dutch aquascapes. It is relatively tolerant of variations in water parameters, including temperature ranging from 23-28°C.
Aquascaping & Usage
This variety of Cryptocoryne is versatile in aquariums, suitable for placement in the background, midground, or as a specimen plant. Its slow growth rate allows for easy maintenance and shaping within the aquascape. In outdoor settings, it is unsuitable for colder climates, requiring a stable indoor environment to thrive.
Propagation
Propagation of Cryptocoryne cordata var. blassii can be achieved through various methods, including runners, rhizome division, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. This plant's propagation potential makes it a sustainable option for aquarists looking to expand their aquatic plant collection.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the southern regions of Thailand, parts of Malaysia, and Borneo, Cryptocoryne cordata var. blassii thrives in the shaded rivers and swamplands typical of its natural habitat. Its adaptability to different water conditions and relatively low maintenance requirements make it a sought-after plant for aquarists worldwide.
