General Description

Cryptocoryne coronata, scientifically known as Cryptocoryne coronata Bastm. & Wijng., is a sizable water trumpet plant that bears a resemblance to C. usteriana, with notable differences in the spathe distinguishing the two species. Belonging to the family Araceae, this plant is classified under the major group of Seed plants: Flowering plants (Angiosperms) and the order Alismatales. It is native to Insel Mindanao in the Philippines, specifically near Zamboanga.

Aquarium Suitability

Cryptocoryne coronata is considered an easy plant to care for in an aquarium setting. Its slow growth rate, along with the ability to thrive in a wide range of light intensities (low to high), makes it suitable for various tank setups. It is often used as a cichlid-proof plant and can be placed in the background, midground, or even as a stand-alone specimen plant.

Demands and HardinessFor optimal growth, C. coronata requires a carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the range of 5-40mg/l and a pH level of 6-8. It can adapt to a temperature range of 22-26°C, with a tolerance level between 15-28°C. This plant is not suitable for outdoor use in colder climates.

Aquascaping & Usage

Due to its rosette growth pattern, Cryptocoryne coronata adds an appealing visual dimension to aquascapes, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the aquarium. Its versatility in placement and hardiness against cichlids make it a popular choice for aquarists looking to create lush underwater landscapes.

Propagation

Propagation of Cryptocoryne coronata can be achieved through various methods including runners, rhizome division, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. This ease of propagation allows for the expansion of the plant within the aquarium environment.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Cryptocoryne coronata thrives in the waters near Zamboanga in the Philippines. However, the plant is rarely cultivated commercially, leading to limited availability in the trade market. This scarcity adds to the allure of incorporating this unique water trumpet species into aquascape designs.
