General Description

Cryptocoryne hudoroi, also known as water trumpet, is a species of aquatic plant belonging to the Araceae family. It is characterized by its narrow-oval, strongly bullous leaves, reaching a height of approximately 20-50 cm. Native to the south of Kalimantan in Indonesia, this plant thrives in limestone areas, forming dense submersed populations in swiftly-flowing rivers. In low water conditions, these populations continue to grow emersed. Despite its attractiveness and relatively easy care, Cryptocoryne hudoroi remains a rare find in the aquarium trade since its importation in the 1990s.

Aquarium Suitability

Cryptocoryne hudoroi is considered suitable for aquariums, offering a unique addition to aquatic setups. Its medium difficulty level in maintenance makes it manageable for hobbyists seeking a moderate challenge.

Demands and Hardiness

Cryptocoryne hudoroi requires a temperature range of 25-29°C and can tolerate fluctuations between 18-30°C. It thrives in a pH range of 5-7.5 and necessitates moderate lighting from low to high intensities. The plant benefits from a carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration of 10-40mg/l and nutrient levels, such as nitrate (NO3-), phosphate (PO43-), and potassium (K+), falling within specific ranges. While it can adapt to water hardness levels of 2-12 dKH (carbonate hardness) and iron (Fe) concentrations of 0.01-0.5mg/l, it is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates, indicating it thrives indoors in controlled environments.

Aquascaping & Usage

Cryptocoryne hudoroi serves as an ideal midground plant in aquascaping layouts, adding depth and texture to aquarium designs. Its rosette growth habit contributes to a balanced and visually appealing underwater landscape.

Propagation

The propagation of Cryptocoryne hudoroi can be achieved through various methods, including runners, rhizome division, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. These techniques enable aquarists to multiply their plant stock and enhance the density of Cryptocoryne hudoroi within the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is endemic to the south of Kalimantan, Indonesia, where it predominantly inhabits limestone areas in rapidly flowing rivers. Despite being reported in only a few locations, Cryptocoryne hudoroi exhibits adaptability to both submersed and emersed growth forms in its natural habitat. Its limited distribution adds to its allure and rarity in the aquatic plant world.
