General Description

Cryptocoryne × purpurea, a member of the Araceae family, is a water trumpet plant originally discovered in Kota Tingii, western Malaysia. First described by H.N. Ridley as Cryptocoryne purpurea, it was once a common aquarium plant in Europe and America. However, it is now rarely commercially available and mostly cultivated by specialized hobbyists in its emersed form. This plant is a natural hybrid of C. cordata var. cordata and C. griffithii, identified in 1982 by Niels Jacobsen.

Aquarium Suitability

Cryptocoryne × purpurea is considered suitable for aquariums, though its availability is limited. It is categorized as a medium difficulty plant with slow growth. The water conditions required for its cultivation include a pH range of 5-6, temperature between 23-28°C, and medium lighting. It serves as a background, midground, or specimen plant in aquatic setups.

Demands and Hardiness

Cryptocoryne × purpurea has specific water parameter needs, with requirements for carbon dioxide, iron, and potassium levels, among others. The plant is not suitable for outdoor use in colder climates due to its winter hardiness limitations. For detailed water condition specifications, see the provided table.

Aquascaping & Usage

This water trumpet plant can add visual interest to aquascapes, serving as a focal point or background filler. Its rosette growth form contributes to an aesthetically pleasing layout within the aquarium. Proper placement and lighting can enhance the overall look of the tank.

Propagation

Propagation of Cryptocoryne × purpurea can be achieved through various methods such as runners, rhizome division, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. These techniques allow for the expansion of the plant within the aquarium environment.

Habitat and Distribution

The most well-known habitat of Cryptocoryne × purpurea is the expansive marshland of Tasek Bera in Pahang. The plant's distribution is primarily focused in specific regions, and its natural hybrid origin contributes to its unique characteristics within its native habitat.
