General Description

Cryptocoryne pygmaea, commonly known as dwarf crypt, is a plant species belonging to the Araceae family. Native to the Philippines, particularly found in regions such as Palawan, Busuanga, and western Mindanao, this plant is often seen in rivers and rivulets with varying water hardness levels both emersed and submersed. Initially mistaken for C. auriculata from Borneo, live specimens of C. pygmaea were first discovered in Europe in the 1970s. In its natural habitat and emersed form, it remains relatively small, around 5-8 cm in height; however, when submersed, it can grow up to 25 cm tall.

Aquarium Suitability

Cryptocoryne pygmaea is known to be an excellent aquarium plant that is relatively easy to cultivate, making it suitable for aquariums. Despite its lesser-known status in the hobby, this plant shows variability in its leaves and inflorescences. In aquariums, it can be used in the midground or foreground as a group, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the aquatic environment.

Demands and Hardiness

This plant's requirements include a carbon dioxide level of 5-40mg/l, a hardness of 8-20, iron content between 0.01-0.5mg/l, low to high light conditions, a nitrate level of 10-50mg/l, a pH range of 6-8, phosphate concentration of 0.1-3mg/l, potassium level between 5-30mg/l, and a temperature range of 22-26°C. Cryptocoryne pygmaea is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquarium settings, Cryptocoryne pygmaea can be used for aquascaping purposes, especially for creating a lush and natural-looking aquatic environment. Its small size and distinctive leaf structure make it ideal for adding depth and visual interest to the tank layout. Its versatility allows it to be used as a midground or foreground plant in groups, contributing to the overall aesthetics of the aquarium.

Propagation

The propagation of Cryptocoryne pygmaea can be achieved through various methods, including runners, rhizome division, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. These propagation techniques ensure the continuous growth and spread of this plant within the aquarium environment.

Habitat and Distribution

Cryptocoryne pygmaea is predominantly found in rivers and rivulets in the Philippines, specifically in regions such as Palawan, Busuanga, and western Mindanao. It thrives in both emersed and submersed conditions, displaying adaptability to varying water parameters and habitats within its native distribution range.
