General Description
Cryptocoryne undulata Wendt, a member of the Araceae family, is a species from the Cryptocoryne wendtii group, commonly found in the hobby due to its unique characteristics. Originating from the central highlands of Sri Lanka, specifically in the vicinity of Kandy, this plant can be located emersed and submersed along rivers and rivulets. Its distinct brown, slightly undulated, and sometimes marbled leaves make C. undulata a visually appealing addition to any aquarium, particularly for the middleground.
Aquarium Suitability
C. undulata is frequently available commercially and is known for its ease of cultivation in aquariums. It thrives in nutrient-rich substrates with ample lighting, although it can also tolerate unfertilized water and low light conditions. Aquarium suitability is high for this plant, making it a popular choice among aquarists.
Demands and Hardiness
With easy difficulty levels, C. undulata does not require CO2 fertilization for growth. It flourishes best when provided with nutrients in the substrate and adequate lighting. It is recommended not to plant it too densely to allow room for growth. The plant's temperature tolerance ranges from 22-26°C, and it can withstand temperatures between 15-28°C. Carbon dioxide levels between 5-40mg/l, a pH range of 5-8, and nitrate levels of 10-50mg/l are suitable for its growth.
Aquascaping & Usage
Ideal for the midground or even the foreground of an aquarium, C. undulata pairs well with bright green and intensely red plants, creating a visually striking aquatic environment. Planting it behind low-growing light breed plants enhances its aesthetic appeal. Its compact growth and distinctive leaf structure make it a great addition to aquascaped tanks.
Propagation
Propagation of C. undulata is relatively simple. It can be propagated by cutting off the runners close to the mother plant and replanting the daughter plants. Young plants develop quickly once rooted, allowing for the expansion of the plant mass within a short period.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, C. undulata is found along rivers and rivulets in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It has adapted to grow both emersed and submersed in these aquatic environments, displaying resilience and versatility in its distribution range.
