General Description
Cryptocoryne usteriana, a member of the Cryptocoryne genus in the Araceae family, is a large aquatic plant that can reach heights of up to 70 cm. It is primarily found submerged in rivers on the Philippine island of Guimaras. Often confused with C. aponogetifolia due to similarities, cultivated specimens labeled as C. usteriana are frequently C. aponogetifolia.
Aquarium Suitability
This plant is deemed suitable for aquariums, particularly in Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi Cichlid tanks. It is known for thriving in hard water conditions, similar to its relative C. aponogetifolia.
Demands and Hardiness
Cryptocoryne usteriana has an easy care level and slow growth rate. It is recommended for backgrounds, midgrounds, as a specimen plant, and is cichlid-proof. See table for specific water parameter requirements.
Aquascaping & Usage
Aquascapers can use Cryptocoryne usteriana to create lush environments with its large size and rosette growth habit, serving well in the background or midground of aquariums.
Propagation
Propagation of Cryptocoryne usteriana is achieved via runners, rhizome division, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants, allowing for the expansion of plant populations in aquariums.
Habitat and Distribution
Originally from Insel Guimaras in the Philippines, Cryptocoryne usteriana is primarily found submerged in river habitats. It shows a preference for hard water environments and is not suitable for outdoor growth in colder climates.
