General Description

Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides, also known as lawn pennywort, is a creeping plant native to the Asian and African tropics. It has the ability to thrive both in dry land and water environments, making it a versatile species. The plant is often considered an invasive weed in lawns, boggy areas, and along small rivers and rivulets in various regions. Its small leaves, measuring between 1 and 2 cm wide, resemble those of Brazilian pennywort (Hydrocotyle leucocephala).

Aquarium Suitability

Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides is occasionally available in the commercial market for aquarium enthusiasts. It is categorized as a medium difficulty plant suitable for midground and foreground placement in aquariums, particularly in nano tanks. The plant demands high light levels and additional CO2 injection (20-30 mg/l) for optimal growth and development. Regular nutrient supplementation with nitrate, phosphate, iron, and micronutrients is necessary for its well-being (see table).

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquariums, Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides serves as an attractive fore- and midground plant, adding a unique light grayish-green color to the aquatic landscape. Its trailing growth habit requires occasional trimming to maintain its shape and prevent neighboring plants from being overshadowed. When planting, simply position the shoots in the desired area, secure them with small pebbles, and watch as they establish themselves over time.

Propagation

Propagation of Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides is relatively simple as the plant produces numerous lateral shoots that can be trimmed and replanted, similar to other stem plants. Emersed cultivation, especially during warm months above the waterline, accelerates growth and facilitates the production of additional cuttings. The plant may also develop inconspicuous white flowers and green infructescences in such conditions.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is typically found in tropical to warm-temperate regions in Asia and tropical Africa. While it can flourish in aquatic settings, Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides also grows successfully as a terrestrial plant in moderately moist soil, displaying weed-like characteristics. Its adaptability makes it suitable for use as ground cover in well-lit terraria, paludaria, and even as potted plants on brightly lit windowsills.
