General Description
Hydrocotyle verticillata, commonly known as Whorled pennywort, is a plant belonging to the family Araliaceae. It is characterized by its unique parasol-like leaves and creeping runners that form a dense carpet underwater. The plant thrives in warmer regions of the Americas, preferring very moist soils and shallow water. Unlike its more widespread counterpart, H. leucocephala, H. verticillata does not have slotted leaves.
Aquarium Suitability
Cultivating H. verticillata in an aquarium is considered relatively simple, making it a popular choice among aquarists. It is suitable for midground and foreground placement or in groupings. The plant has a fast growth rate and can be used in various aquarium sizes, adding a striking visual appeal with its unique leaf structure.
Demands and Hardiness
The plant's growth is influenced by light intensity, with higher intensity resulting in smaller plant size. Adequate nutrient supply and CO2 injection are essential for optimal growth. However, excessive nutrients can cause the plant to lose its dwarf form and develop larger leaves. H. verticillata is known to tolerate a wide range of temperatures, making it a hardy option for aquariums.
Aquascaping & Usage
With its low height and distinctive leaf growth, H. verticillata is ideal for foreground planting in larger tanks and can be used as the sole foreground plant in smaller aquariums. Regular maintenance, such as trimming with sharp scissors, helps control its growth and maintain a neat carpeting effect along the substrate.
Propagation
Propagation of H. verticillata can be achieved through various methods, including runners, cuttings, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. This allows for easy expansion of the plant within the aquarium setup.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, H. verticillata thrives in very moist soils and shallow waters, primarily found in the warmer regions of the Americas. Its ability to form dense carpets underwater and adapt to varying conditions makes it a versatile plant in aquatic environments.
